As you might recall, Mike is a late vocation and left the secular world at 30 to explore his vocation to the priesthood.  He just finished his first year at St. Joseph's seminary college and tells us about his experience there: What he expected and didn't expect, daily life, and his hopes for the future.

Mike is a unique case in that he is what we call a "late" vocation.  Mike is 30 years old and has heard the call from God to serve as a priest. 

I pick Mike's brain for about 20 minutes to find out why now?  Why after going to college, having a good job, and living in the secular world does he feel the call now? 

Mike is a personal friend and I pray that God always walks with him in his journey towards the priesthood.

Update from when I originally published this.  There is a book a friend thought I would like.  It is called An Exorcist Tells His Story.  THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC!!!  Written by Fr. Gabriel Amorth, he details the nature of evil and the forms it takes.  I think this is one of the best books I have ever read on this topic.

In Episode 12, RCIA Guide for Dummies, I sit down with Rick Beben, Director of Spirituality at St. Aloysius Parish in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.

We discuss The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.  I tried to pay particular attention to the format that St. Aloysius uses for their hugely successful RCIA ministry.  Hopefully, if you are involved in this ministry, listening to this podcast can give you some ideas to help improve yours at whatever parish you may be in.

On this Episode 11, we sit with Ken Thevenet, Director of Liturgy and Music for St. Aloysius Parish in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.  Ken has his Bachelors degree in Organ from the school of music at Louisiana State University and a Masters degree in Liturgical Music from The University of Notre Dame.

We get the chance to listen to Ken play some liturgical music on the organ at the beginning and end of the podcast.  We also discuss with Ken what is considered appropriate music in liturgy and what the Church says about music in liturgy and how it should be used. 

I would like to thank Ken for allocating time in his busy schedule to help us understand the importance of music and the role it plays.

In Episode 10 Canon Law 101, I stop by the office of Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Baton Rouge, Fr. Paul Counce.

In a nutshell, this podcast contains the overview of Canon Law: What it is, what are canon lawyers, how does the Church use this type of law, and how we, as Catholics, will encounter canon law in our Church life.

We also discuss what to do if you see an "abuse" in the Church.  How one should discern this "abuse" and the appropriate steps to report it.  Don't go emailing the Bishop from your iphone during mass, please.

Fr. Counce is a wealth of knowledge and I hope to have him on future episodes dealing with issues we might encounter as lay Catholics and issues we might never (hopefully) encounter, including........

In Episode 9 Googling God with Mike Hayes, I had the opportunity to hear author of Googling God and managing editor of BustedHalo.com speak.  He was the keynote speaker at a local diocesan conference called Identity Theft: Is Your Catholic Identity Safe?

Mike spoke on the two distinct generations of young adults, Gen X and Millennials.  He discusses what characterizes these two generations and how we, as Catholic ministers, can reach these two generations and help them connect to the Church and more importantly, how we as the Church can connect to them.  He tells us how to do this by describing the different aspects of technology available to us today.

This podcast is longer than most of my podcasts, but I feel what he had to say is important and vital to anyone working with young adults.  If you fall in this category, or are a DRE, catechist, or just want to know how to use what is available to connect to others in your parish or around the world, then this is the podcast for you.

On Episode 8 The Everyday Catholic Videocast, I am interviewed by Fr. Paul Counce, host of a local Catholic television show called Conversations with Fr. Paul Counce.  The interview begins with us discussing this podcast and how I am trying to reach Catholics using a modern media outlet.  On the second part of his show, we discuss how different religions are using varying aspects of the media and if this is necessarily a healthy thing.

I would like to personally thank Fr. Counce for inviting me on his show and congratulate him on a wonderful show he has developed.  His goal is to reach people within their homes and he does an exemplary job.

On Episode 7 The Seminarians: This Time It's Personal, I interview two seminarians for the Diocese of Baton Rouge....Tim Hedrick (thedrick@sjasc.edu) and Joshua Johnson (jjohnson@sjasc.edu).

We discuss their initial calling and then talk about what life is like in the seminary and as a seminarian.  They both currently attend St. Joseph's Seminary which is an undergraduate seminary and then will move on to Notre Dame Seminary for graduate study in New Orleans.

In Episode 4: John Smith, Come on down!  You're the next candidate for the priesthood, we sit down with Fr. Matt Lorrain, the vocations director for the Diocese of Baton Rouge.  Fr. Matt tells us what exactly he does as director of vocations and discusses a program being used to help increase vocations to the priesthood, Called By Name.  The conversation then explores who are possible candidates for the priesthood and why has there has been a decline in vocations over the recent few decades.  Finally, we deal with the issue of priestly celibacy and Fr. In the 3rd episode, A letter from St. Paul to the Freedom of Choice Act Supporters, I begin with a short history of who St. Paul was as a historical person.  Often, as Catholics we tend to read the Scriptures but ignore the person who wrote them.  I start with who he was, then on to his missions and a timeline of the epistles that he authored.  I finish with a Hot Topic that, us, as Catholics, must do everything we can to defeat.  The Freedom of Choice Act.  (Don't you just love what it is called, makes it sound all fuzzy and warm)  Just what is it and what does it do to current abortion legislation?  I explain the key "fundamentals" of the horrific piece of proposed legislation.  As always, I welcome feedback to David@TheEveryDayCatholic.com

So.......just what am I referring to when I use the term, The Everyday Catholic?   This is a two-fold answer: 1) An everyday Catholic is your average, everyday Catholic.  You go to mass, try to live a Christian lifestyle, and know a little about your faith. 2) The second part is trying to live your life, Everyday, as a Catholic. 

I intend to create podcasts that will make you learn and grow in your Catholic faith.  Hopefully, with every podcast, you will learn a little more about what it means to be a Catholic and how to implement it into your Everyday life.
